Roots - Pressed Magazine

Edem Adjah (b. 1999, Accra) is a Ghanaian photographer, image-maker and creative director based in Accra. He uses his photographs to focus on the impressions of what people in the African continent and from the diaspora are experiencing in the moment, while also creating new worlds with his photographs where the subjects can express themselves freely and to make that moment last forever. His photographs tell stories about life in Africa, community, fashion, sustainability, waste management, acceptance and self-love.

He’s been in love with photography his whole life mostly because of his dad, who took a lot of. photographs as a hobby even before Edem was born. So he grew up looking and admiring photographs his dad took of his mom, his friends and relatives. His mom always spoke of the stories behind every photo and that made him understand that photography is a great way of telling stories. This made him see a whole different and interesting side of her that he won’t have seen without those images, how each image came to be and the fact that his dad captured a moment that will lasts forever. He wanted that. Edem’s love for music, fashion, art, family and sports play a deep role every time he picks up the camera to shoot.

He’s one of the trio founders of Grey Area Studios Ghana where he and his co-founders fuse CGI with videography and photography. His works have been showcased by esteemed institutions such as Blank Wall Gallery - Greece, New Comma - London, Holy Art Gallery - New York, London, Africafotofair - Côte d'Ivoire, and Untamed Empire. Additionally, his works have been featured in prominent publications including Photo Vogue, Kenga, Colorbloc Magazine, Prazzle Magazine, and Debonairafrik. In pursuing professional photography, he’s worked with brands including Borussia Dortmund, Neiteh, Subwae Studios, RF Active,Blend skincare, Braandless, Ghana Football Association (GFA), COPA90 and Art of Football. He aims to publish his own photobook, shoot in all African countries, have a solo exhibition and collaborate with his favorite photographers and filmmakers Tyler Mitchell and Renell Medrano who inspires him to be better.
