Hi!! My name is Kasey Baker, I’m a feminist, queer artist creating out of New York. My photography work discusses sexuality, agency, trauma, empowerment, the fem body, and how it's depicted in and represented by the media. Over the past 2 years, my practice has started evolving into meeting with fiber arts, allowing me to explore more topics surrounding craft and “women’s work”. Another important aspect of my work is that it’s heavily focused on my own experiences, hence I make a lot of self-portraits as a way to connect with the viewer and allow each one to take a piece of me with them.
The most valuable advice I could offer a fellow artist, during any stage of their career, is to find importance in spending time alone. Let me clarify that being alone is not the same as feeling lonely, it just means giving your mind time to quiet down. Constantly being in motion, especially as a photographer, can often put people into a toxic relationship with their work because they’re always focused on what the next “better” creation is. Don’t get me wrong, work hard and make a lot of work, it will pay off greatly, but don’t move so fast that you don’t allow your mind time to be quiet and get curious. I think my best ideas for my work have come from sitting alone in my room while I was crocheting and not even thinking about anything in particular. But every once in a while all the thoughts string together and I realize that there’s something really interesting going on there and I need to put it on paper to figure it all out. This process is almost meditative in a way and I think everyone can benefit from a little meditation even if it’s not in the traditional
way.
